Where The Micmac Lived | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The Micmac lived in the Maratimes and down the St. Laurance river. They built their villages near the mouths of rivers or by rivers so they would have plenty of fish, like Salmon. In the winter they moved inland to escape the freezing cold coastal winters. In the spring the Micmac returned home. They simply put the birtch bark on the frames of their Wigwams (their home) to make them home again.

If a Micmac is called a Shaman, they are considered to possess powers. A Shaman could be male or female and the powers that they possess can be used to contact the gods or to cure many illnesses. A Sagamore is a grand chief that ruled all Micmac people. The grand chief holds important meetings when many chiefs gather together to discuss decisions that will affect all Micmac people. This is called the grand council. Each district had a chief. To welcome new chiefs they always had a feast. They also made decisions of the hunting area for each family. Of course this would change each year depending on the family size. There is also a local cheif who leads a group of related families. Some families were as small as 30 or 40 people but most are larger, this gives them people to rely on. Everyone is a member of the local council but only the older men help the chief. They also had slaves, that were captives of war. The male slaves helped around the camp and the women and children were adopted into the community by families.
